Jeep is an American automaker. Jeep has been a part of Chrysler since being acquired in 1987. Chrysler (Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles) has since merged with the French PSA Group to become Stellantix N.V., an international automobile collective and the fifth-largest automaker in the world. These days, Jeep’s brand is mainly sport utility vehicles, including both crossovers and fully off-road SUVs.
Chrysler and Jeep have been the target of several high-profile recalls in recent years, covering dangerously defective engines, faulty airbags, failing fuel pumps, and other problematic assets. 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe: Engine Failure
Chrysler recently announced a recall of close to 63,000 model year 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles built with 2.0L Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle engines. According to the company, the vehicles were installed with faulty software which may lead to loss of communication. Loss of communication can lead to engine shutdown, which can cause a crash if the engine stops while the vehicle is in motion.
Owner notification letters should have been mailed by January 12, 2023. Owners and lessees can obtain free software updates from dealers.
2022-2023 Wrangler PHEV: Battery Failure
Chrysler issued a recall covering close to 14,000 model year 2022-3034 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV) due to an issue with the battery. The high-voltage battery pack assembly was built with the wrong fasteners to secure the fuse. The improper construction can generate excessive heat, causing the fuse to fail and the vehicle to lose drive power. A vehicle that suddenly shuts down in the middle of a drive can easily lead to a catastrophic accident.
Owners should have been notified of the defect by late December 2022. If you own a Wrangler Hybrid, check with your local dealer to find out if your battery may be faulty. Dealerships will inspect the battery for damage and replace any faulty units.
2017-2019 Grand Cherokee: Faulty Brakes
Jeep recently recalled a number of model year 2017-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a problem with the vehicles’ anti-lock brake systems. According to the company, an “issue during manufacture” can cause the system to malfunction. “If this occurs, the brake lights may illuminate or allow the vehicle to start and shift out of park without the brake pedal being depressed. This may result in an unintended vehicle movement.”
In other words, the vehicle can suddenly start moving even if the driver did not intend to move the vehicle. A vehicle suddenly switching out of park can injure nearby pedestrians, damage nearby property, and may lead to an accident harming the vehicle’s passengers. Grand Cherokee owners should check the recall list to see if their vehicle is covered by the recall.
2020-2022 Wrangler, Gladiator, Ram 1500: Fuel Pump Failure
In December 2022, Chrysler issued a recall covering over 60,000 2020-2022 Jeep Wranglers, 2020-2022 Ram 1500s, and 2021-2022 Gladiators. The recall specifically pertains to vehicles built with a 3.0L diesel engine. According to the recall, the installed high-pressure fuel pump is prone to failure, which can cause the engine to stall. Engine stalling in the middle of the road can lead to an accident and serious injury.
