Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is a British automotive manufacturer responsible for producing luxury cars and SUVs under the distinctive Jaguar and Land Rover names. Both brands are well known with storied histories dating to the 1930s and 40s. Despite the reputation for performance among these high-end vehicles, they are not without their issues and safety concerns. Defects, recalls and lawsuits are not unknown to JLR and its line of automobiles. If you own or lease a Jaguar or Land Rover in California with significant warranty defects you can’t get fixed, contact Nita Lemon Law Firm to explore your options with a skilled and experienced California lemon law attorney.

Facts About Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar is a legendary sports car going to the 1930s, with classic models such as the XJS, E-Type and more. Land Rover, meanwhile, dates to the late 1940s. Land Rovers are traditionally known for their four-wheel drive and off-road capabilities, although today they occupy the upscale luxury sport utility market.

Originally produced by separate car companies, Jaguar and Land Rover have been joined since the late 1960s when they both came under the umbrella of British Leyland as Leyland Motors and British Motor Holdings joined forces. After a brief separation when Land Rover took a spell as a BMW subsidiary and Jaguar entered a Ford era, the two were once more reunited in 2008 as Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC (Jaguar Land Rover or JLR) under the auspices of the Indian automotive behemoth Tata Motors.

Current products under the luxury marques include the Jaguar F-PACE, a compact luxury SUV, and over half a dozen Land Rover luxury SUV models, ranging from the subcompact Discovery Sport to the full-size Range Rover.

Safety Defects and Recalls

Perhaps the most significant Jaguar safety recall in recent years has been the recall of 2019 I-PACE models, later expanded to cover 2019-2024, due to the risk of overheating in the car’s high-voltage battery, presenting a dangerous fire risk. This issue has led to individual and class-action lawsuits.

Separately, several models, including the 2021-2022 F-Type, 2020-2021 F-PACE, and 2021 XF, were shipped with seat belt defects that could cause the automatic locking retractors to deactivate too early, which in turn could affect the security of the child restraint system.

Most recently, 2024 F-PACE models were recalled due to a defect in the rearview camera that could lead to a crash or injury while backing up. Another recall impacting the 2024 F-PACE relates to a defect in the engine cooling system. This recall requires replacement of the filter housing, including hoses, lines, piping and fittings. As NHTSA notes in the recall campaign, “an oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.”

Land Rover recalls in recent years have involved defects in critical safety areas such as seatbelts, airbags, and doors. In 2016, JLR recalled 13,500 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport and 2016-2017 Range Rover Sport and Range Rovers due to a defect in the seatbelt pretensioner which could fail to restrain occupants in a crash. A problem with passenger side air bag inflator initiators led to the recall of hundreds of 2016 Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports and the 2017 Range Rover Evoque. An even larger recall impacted over 65,000 2013-2016 Range Rovers and 2014-2016 Range Rover Sports due to defective door latches.

2024 Land Rover recalls include a recall of the Discovery Sport for faulty rearview camera sensors as well as a separate recall due to inadequate structural strength (crashworthiness) that could fail to protect passengers in a crash. The 2024 Range Rover is subject to five separate recalls, including the two mentioned above plus defects in the engine, engine cooling system, and power train clutch assembly that could lead to loss of driver power, oil leaks and risk of fire. One or more of these defects are also the cause of recalls of the 2024 Ranger Rover Evoque, Sport and Velar models.

Although Land Rover has not issued a recall on this particular issue, a class-action lawsuit was filed alleging defects in the 2020-2022 Defender models that could cause the windshields to shatter or crack without warning or fail after a minor impact. The complaint alleges that Land Rover was aware of the safety issue yet failed to take remedial steps.
